The Barhe Bar is owned by Nick Dunne and his sister Margo, located downtown of North Carthage on a street corner across from a bowling alley. After Amy and Nick both lose their jobs in New York due to the recession, Nick uses what’s left of Amy’s trust fund to buy a bar back in his hometown. He sees the bar as a reclaiming of his adulthood, he now spends most of his time there instead of at home.
“We spent more time in the bar then we needed to. It had become the childhood clubhouse we never had” - nick dunne(16) The little brown houseNicks fathers old house, it’s little but its not brown, this is more of an inside joke between nick and Amy. After his parents' divorce, Nick eased his pain as a child by creating a story that his father was an important man named Mr. Brown who worked for the United States and used Nick as a cover to avoid drawing attention to himself. The house was repainted when they put it on the market but Amy still refers to it as brown in her scavenger hunt. this is where Amy leaves a clue and the diary she wrote.
“The little brown house story is about my father and Amy is the only person i’d ever told it to” Nick Dunne Tom sawyer parkA week after Amy's disappearance to raise awareness and give hope in finding Amy, a candle light vigil at tom sawyer park is held. This location was chosen because it was allegedly Amy's favorite place which Nick says is probably not true. Shortly after Nick and his in-laws make a statement about Amy and her disappearance, Noelle Hawthorne and her three triplets make her way through the crowd so that she can ask questions about her best friend Amy and reveals that Amy was pregnant which Nick was not aware of.
“This man, Nick Dunne, needs to answer some questions. He needs to tell us what he did to his wife...his pregnant wife!” -Noelle Hawthorne(193) |
North carthage police departmentAfter Amy has gone missing Nick is brought into the police department for questioning by Detective Boney. He describes the police department to have the appearance of a failing community bank. A couple hours pass by and the police officers begin to ask questions about Amy’s disappearance which leads to the realization that Nick really had no clue what his wife Amy had been up to for the past 2 years
“ in Missouri...good god, i really didn't know. It only occurred to me then, you truly are an asshole.” Nick Dunne(46) Nick & amy's houseNick and Amy’s home is along the Mississippi river and a 15 minute drive, straight north along river road from the bar. Nick and Amy are renting the house instead of buying it because they assumed they wouldn’t be staying in North Carthage for long. Amy loved her home and her life in New York and now she hates her new life in Missouri and dreads Nick for moving them
mississpi riverIn Gone girl, the Mississippi river is more then just one of the settings or background. Its a metaphor for Nick and Amy's relationship. Like the river, Nick and Amy's troubled relationship is overwhelmingly large, deep and far reaching. No matter the mess a Amy's made at home she cant run or hide from it.
“Everywhere I go is the river, i'm following it, or its following me.”-Amy Dunne(319) |
